K. Davis

Every piece of art is its own little journey. Every gathering, its own sweet destination. Let’s explore together!

A native of Oxnard without formal training, Davis has honed her craft alongside the county itself – friends, family, diversity in her community, and the beauty of the surrounding nature have all contributed to an emerging artistic sensibility. Her early works varied in form and function; from collage assemblages in open-call exhibitions to public murals at local high schools. Landscapes and other works inspired by nature soon followed. Today, pour-painting finds itself at the fore of the artist’s style.

Asked to describe the appeal of pour-painting, Davis explained, “Pour-painting is an exercise of setting intentions, accepting the unexpected, and knowing when to quit. Its color and composition, simultaneously simple and complex. I must consider the opaque or translucent properties of the colors, how different brands may react to one another, the viscosity of the mixtures and so much more. Once it is time to pour there is a sense of urgency. Finally, there is the unexpected result. All of the calculations complete, and paint poured, I am often left with results better than imagined.”

As she studies the work of other pour-painters and continues to experiment with the form, Davis finds that a willingness to fail keeps her just as motivated as a desire to succeed. To the artist’s eye, surprises are the true fruit of pour-painting..
